Alumni Weekend/ Rock 'n Roll Half - San Antonio

The weekend of Nov. 9-11, my family went down to San Antonio for alumni weekend at Trinity U., as well as a little race with 25,000 of our closest friends, otherwise known as the Rock 'n Roll Half Marathon (although they also had a full marathon and a 3 mile "mini marathon").

J and I arrived in SA on Friday evening (sans the Peanut thanks to Pops and Grandma Judy) and decided to hit up a place we had seen on Food Network's Diners, Drive-Ins and Dives: Dough.

Even though we got there around 8:00, the wait was still close to an hour, so we got ourselves a "we are childless for the weekend" bottle of wine and drank it while we waited on their outdoor patio.

We ended up sitting at the chef's table so we were able to watch all the action in the (very small) kitchen.  We started off with a buratta, which is a little pillow of cheesy goodness.  This one was surrounded by butternut squash puree and wild mushrooms and sage.  Yum.

I could have been done after eating my body weight in cheese, but why stop there?  Instead we added to our gluttony by enjoying a Napoleon-style pizza, which had the best crust I had ever tasted...this is probably a good thing, since that's what this restaurant is really all about.

The next morning the guys went golfing at the Quarry, and the girls headed out for breakfast before making our way to the campus.

We walked around a little bit before going to a talk by one of my favorite professors while at TU - Dr. Colleen Grissom.  She is truly one of the smartest people I have ever met in my life - and one of the funniest.  She taught my Writer's Workshop course my first year at Trinity, and then as a senior, I took her Contemporary Literature course.

 The infamous tower.

 The fountain.

 3 Trinity Alumni.

This is the building where I took most of my courses for my major.  It's getting a total makeover...

The mural in the library.

That evening we went to the expo to pick up my packet for the race I wouldn't be running because of my stupid SI joint.  I was not a happy camper.  Nothing like being surrounded by lots of people who are buzzing with excitement about running a race that you cannot run.  But alas.  Such is life.

That night was the actual reunion (I graduated 10 years ago!  I don't know how this is possible!).  Earlier in the day I had the opportunity to go to lunch with one of my favorite sociology professors and one of my sorority sisters from my pledge class who now has the same job title as my professor - so cool!  It really was fun to catch up with old classmates and favorite professors.

Here's a picture of the people from my class who came...of course, it was the most fun to see friends who were the same major as me and my sorority sisters.  Next reunion, I'll go to the class function for a while and then go to the Sigma function.  I was sad that I missed out on seeing some of my sorority sisters who didn't go to the "official" class reunion.

The next morning was the race.  Sister and Dad ran the half together, and mom and I ran the 3 miler.

Mom and I were way in the back, so we had to wait quite a while to start. :)

Waiting to run...it was mom's first race!

Approaching the starting line in downtown SA.

Loved the sign on mom's back.

We did it!  It was SOOOO hot and humid - good 'ole San Antone.

J and B were a great cheering section for mom and me.

Looking for K and Dad near the finish at the Alamodome.

 There they are!!!

Making their way to the finish line.

They are my inspiration.  Both Dad and Sister tore the labrum in their hip while training for the Chicago marathon last year...and they were able to run again.  Fingers crossed!

 The whole family. :)

After a tasty lunch at EZ's, I needed Amy's ice cream.  Yes, I said "needed."  Mexican vanilla with oatmeal cookies.  Pretty, pretty good.

We had a great time eating good food, seeing good friends, and running through the streets of downtown San Antonio.  I do wish I had been able to run the half, but life went on, and I'm really glad I was able to run the 3 miles with my mom.  :)
